Dr. Mary Robbins

Mary Robbins

Mary Robbins began playing piano before age 3 in Rutherford County, North Carolina, and by junior high school was an award-winning student at the state and national levels, at the Converse Pre-College Music Department, the Brevard Music Center, the NC Governor's School and other centers for piano study. She attended the Converse College School of Music and The University of Texas at Austin, and holds a Bachelor of Music degree with Honors, a Master of Music, and a Doctorate of Musical Arts. Her teachers included professors at the Converse College School of Music Nancy Wright, John Elvin, and George Lucktenberg, and , at UT William Race, Danielle Martin, Gregory Allen, and (for pedagogy) Amanda Vick Lethco. She also received individual coaching from John Perry, Leon Fleisher and Paul Badura-Skoda.

As a soloist, she has been described by critics as "a superb Mozart interpreter" and her performances "scrupulously detailed, with an extra degree of fervor," as "taking the hearer's breath away for the depth of her music experience," and as "bringing a fresh sense of awe to the music." An advocate of many musical styles, she has toured France performing music of contemporary French composers. In addition to her performances as a soloist, Ms. Robbins enjoys frequent chamber music collaborations with other acclaimed artists.

Mary RobbinsA recognized Mozart scholar, she presented a talk in 1991 at the International Bicentennial Mozart Congress in Salzburg, Austria, on her original findings concerning Mozart's cadenzas. Dr. Robbins has composed cadenzas for the six late Mozart piano concertos where his cadenzas have not survived, that follow the style of Mozart's own. Leading Mozart pianist Paul Badura-Skoda has offered to write an introduction for the publication of her cadenzas. She also has begun writing about the articulation markings found in all of Mozart's music, and their significance in the performance of his music on modern instruments today.

She serves as Artistic Director for A. Mozart Fest, which she founded in 1991. She also teaches piano and has given workshops to teachers throughout the US and Canada in association with the Alfred Publishing Company. She is listed in Who's Who in American Women, and Who's Who in the 21st Century.
